Taking Seth Siegelaub’s landmark July, August, September 1969 as its point of departure, July, August, September 2012 reactivates the exhibition-as-publication more than four decades later. Edited by Michalis Pichler, the book brings together contributions by Eric Doeringer, Craig Dworkin, Robert Fitterman, Michael Maranda, Jonathan Monk, Vanessa Place, Seth Siegelaub, The Yes Men, Eleanor Vonne Brown and Pichler himself. Siegelaub—whose radical experiments displaced the exhibition from gallery space into printed matter—returns here with a new contribution and is photographed at his Amsterdam home alongside his long, blurred shadow. Published by Pichler’s “greatest hits,” the project operates simultaneously as appropriation, homage and renewed exhibition: a book in which the publication is not the documentation of the show, but the show itself.
