Beginning with an unlikely found image—a children’s colouring book showing Donald Duck painting himself into existence—Christine Moldrickx’s Eendenbewustzijn turns a familiar cartoon body into something unstable, anatomical and strangely alive. Across a sequence of watercolours and drawings, kidneys, breasts, genitals and other bodily fragments dissolve the border between human and animal, inside and outside, fantasy and physical fact. Taking its title from the Dutch for “duck consciousness,” the work moves through desire, pleasure, fear and self-creation with an unsettling humour, while drawing on Patrick Bahners’ writing on the quasi-human biology of the Ducks. Published as the third title in the Archiv Untergrund series and edited by artist Max Schulze, Eendenbewustzijn is a compact study of the body as an open, mutable image.
