Published on the occasion of Wolfgang Tillmans’ major exhibitions at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, and K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, this artist-designed catalogue surveys nearly two decades of Tillmans’ continually expanding photographic practice. Edited and designed by Tillmans himself, the publication moves through portraits, still lifes, nightlife, landscapes, abstraction and installation views without establishing a hierarchy between image types—a logic central to his radical rethinking of how photographs circulate and acquire meaning. An essay by art historian and critic Tom Holert, The Unforeseen: On the Production of the New, and Other Movements in the Work of Wolfgang Tillmans, situates the work within broader questions of perception, politics and image production. Published for Tillmans’ first major exhibition in Sweden, the book operates less as a conventional retrospective than as an extension of his exhibition practice: photographs in shifting scales and contexts forming an open, unstable visual field.
