In 1953 the young Robert Rauschenberg, carrying a bottle of Jack Daniels, nervously knocked on the studio door of the master abstract painter Willem de Kooning. His request that de Kooning gave him a drawing to erase was not warmly received. After a few persuasive drinks de Kooning hesitantly agreed, but "only it has to be something awfully difficult to erase." The erasure took Rauschenberg over a month "and even then it wasn't completely erased." For Rauschenberg "it was not a negation, but a celebration." And it "wore out a lot of erasers."
